Small Group Resources

We’re recommending three different kinds of resources for small group curriculum, including: (1) Books/Studies; (2) Commentaries; and (3) Sermon Series.

1. Books / Studies

Books:

  • Counterfeit Gods: The Empty Promises of Money, Sex, and Power, and the Only Hope that Matters, Tim Keller. In this book Keller considers the things we hope for and what those hopes reveal about us.
  • Growing in Christ, J.I. Packer. Includes short chapters with questions following each chapter.
  • A Long Obedience in the Same Direction: Discipleship in an Instant Society, Eugene H. Peterson
  • The Prodigal God: Recovering the Heart of the Christian Faith, Tim Keller. In this book Keller “uncovers the essential message of Jesus, locked inside his most familiar parable.”
  • The Prodigal God: Discussion Guide & DVD. The same message as the book is available in a DVD with an accompanying discussion guide.
  • Simply Christian, N. T. Wright. A cogent defense of Christianity for this generation.
  • True Spirituality, Francis A. Schaeffer

Studies:

  • Redeemer Presbyterian Church
    • Gospel Christianity studies. (Gospel Christianity I: Gospel & the Heart; Gospel Christianity II: Gospel & the World; Gospel Christianity III: Gospel & Community)
    • The Gospel of Mark. This study goes through the entirety of Marks gospel, paying special attention to Mark’s theme of Kingdom.
    • Praying with the Psalms. A study of how and what to pray that is rooted in the Psalms.
  • John Stott Bible Studies. Bible study guides for more than 10 different books of the Bible. You can peruse the studies on Amazon.
  • Kathleen Buswell Nielson studies. Study guides for several different books of the Bible. Available on Amazon.

2. Commentaries

  • Bible Speaks Today series, various authors. Edited by John Stott, this series provides pastors, students, and laypeople with readable yet accurate exposition of the entire New Testament.
  • For Everyone series, Tom Wright. (E.g. Luke for Everyone) The series, written by Wright, includes most books of the New Testament. Its aim is to be both informative and practical.
  • The Sermon on the Mount, Sinclair Ferguson. A classic, and excellent exposition of the sermon on the Mount.
  • Tyndale New Testament Commentary series. Trusted and straight-forward but not trite.

3. Sermon Series
Discuss and unpack each Sunday’s message. The sermon will serve as a starting point for further discussion of the text and will thus supplement the group leader’s own study and preparation.
