From Refugee to Chicagoan: Stories of Making Place (Community Space 3rd Sunday Series)

Join us at the Community Space as we hear from refugees about the experience of leaving their homes and settling in Chicago. As we look to welcome our neighbor and love our neighborhood, we’re excited for this opportunity to get to know them both in new ways. All refugees share a history of a life divided, with a definitive before and after, but we’ll hear from individuals about their unique stories and have time to learn about the refugee resettlement process as a whole.

This presentation is a part of our Third Sunday Series. Child care will be provided.

America to Me Screening and Discussion (Community Space 3rd Sunday Series) w/ discussion facilitated by Ashley N. Leonard; Executive Director, Spark Program.

Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Steve James (Hoop Dreams, Life Itself) examines racial, economic and class issues in contemporary American education in the multi-part unscripted documentary series America to Me. This series spends an academic year at Chicagoland's Oak Park and River Forest High School. Reflecting on Langston Hughes’s prophetic poem, “Let America Be America Again,” America to Me looks at the complexities of race, identity, privilege, and education through the eyes of a diverse group of young people. Join us as we watch and discuss one of the America to Me episodes. Screening will be followed by a discussion facilitated by Ashley N. Leonard; Executive Director, Spark Program. (full bio here)

Come join us for a discussion on trauma as Dr. Elizabeth Pierre helps walk us through a basic understanding; what one might expect after traumatic experiences; and some ways to offer support to those around us who are suffering in our midst.
